PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONS
Center for Retention Studies
The Center for Retention Studies collaborates with the schools and colleges of Syracuse University and the Division of Student Affairs to meet their retention goals. The Center provides resources and research by which the Retention Council creates, implements, and evaluates retention program initiatives.
CSTEP
Jointly sponsored by SU and the New York State Department of Education,
the Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program (CSTEP) uses grants to assist
students who are underrepresented in higher education. CSTEP ensures individual
attention and support for undergraduate and graduate students pursuing professional
licensure or careers in science, technology and health professions.
Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP)
GEAR UP is an innovative collaboration between Syracuse University and the Syracuse
City School District that provides college preparation for at-risk students. This project is funded by a federal grant administered by the New York State Higher Education Services Corporation (HESC).
The Tutoring & Study Center (TSC)
The TSC selects and trains undergraduate and graduate student tutors.
Students may request one-on-one tutorials or study group facilitators for undergraduate level courses. The TSC also works closely with academic departments and disseminates information regarding campus-wide academic resources.
Office of Disability Services (ODS)
The Office of Disability Services provides support services for students with documented disability-related academic impairments. The goal is to facilitate equal access to all academic programs and services for students with physical, psychological, and learning disabilities.
The Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program (McNair)
The McNair program assists first-generation, high financial need students or under-represented students who plan to pursue doctoral degrees. Funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education.
STEP
Jointly sponsored by SU and the New York State Department of Education, the Science and Technology Entry Program (STEP) uses grants to assist students who are underrepresented in higher education. STEP provides students in grades 7 through 12 with tutorial and enrichment programs to develop students' interest in math and science.
Student SUccess Initiative (SSUI)
The Student SUccess Initiative (SSUI) is a program committed to the retention of students. It is designed for the undergraduate who is dedicated to making a change in his/her approach to academic and personal development. In partnership with schools and colleges, SSUI provides a comprehensive learning community experience that includes personal coaching, study groups, clinics, and tutorials as well as social activities that fully support the development and utilization of success-oriented skills and strategies.
Summer College for High School Students
This six-week summer, residential program introduces high school students to college life. They earn college credit by taking two courses housed within one of nine programs of study, while exploring the campus and its resources.
SummerStart for First-Year Students
This six-week summer, residential program provides incoming S.U. first-year students with the opportunity to become familiar with the academic, social, and cultural life at Syracuse before the rush of the fall semester. Students earn credits toward their degree by selecting two to three courses in association with an academic advisor.
Supportive Services
The Office of Supportive Services (OSS) oversees two government programs that provide assistance to undergraduate students.
Through the Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP), the University accepts students that might be overlooked by regular admissions standards. This New York State program recognizes and recruits state residents who demonstrate academic potential and initiative. OSS provides tutoring, counseling, advising, and full financial aid to these students.
Student Support Services (SSS) is a federal program sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education that allows SU to identify students already admitted to the University whose economic or academic background puts them at-risk for completing their degrees. OSS works to minimize these risk factors by providing eligible students with full financial aid, counseling, tutoring, advising, and other support services.
