In the News: Scott Freeney
"Scott Freeney, an academic counselor for the Syracuse University football
program speaks with students attending Gear Up summer school. He brings advice
that he uses with current team members, which includes making academics a
priority. He also has a basketball signed by the 2002-2003 SU Men's National Champion
Basketball team. The message he delivers to the class using the ball - each signature
represents a person who had to graduate high school first in order to get the chance
to go to college."
Summer School at SU: July 7 - August 18, 2004
This year NYS Gear Up and Syracuse University are collaborating to sponsor a unique
session of SCSD Summer School at SU on the Syracuse University campus. District teachers
will partner with University faculty to present classes that will prepare students to
retake NYS Regents examinations in four areas - English, U.S. History, Mathematics and Chemistry -
and the local examination in English and Language Arts (ELA). This project is a special
privilege for eligible students.
Who is eligible?
Students who are currently in the eleventh grade at Henninger and Fowler High Schools will be given first priority for Summer School at SU. Students may take only courses they have failed during the school year.
Transportation
Transportation is not provided by the Syracuse City School District, and campus parking for cars or bicycles is not available to students. We encourage students to walk, travel by Centro bus, or secure rides.
Attendance
Research reveals that regular class attendance and participation is crucial to success on Regents and local standard examinations. Thus attendance at all class sessions is mandatory. Students who are absent or tardy from any class will be dropped from the program.
Textbooks
Syracuse City School District textbooks will be used in classrooms only. Textbooks will stay on campus.
Grades
Report cards will be issued twice during Summer School at SU, July 19th and August 2nd.
A postcard will notify students of their final grade(s) at the end of the summer.
Grades will be returned to the home school. Home school is defined as the school
enrollment June 2004. It is the responsibility of the home school to award credit.
